The disease develops chronically, and can be complicated by sometimes severe ocular involvement, facial pyoderma (rosacea fulminans), rhinophyma (severe hypertrophic form).

It is characterized by alternating periods of exacerbation and remission.

There is a strong female predominance of light phototype after the age of 30. Sometimes confused with acne, which is problematic as acne products can further irritate the fragile skin of rosacea sufferers.

Linked to genetic factors (family history...) and triggering factors (invasion by microbial agents such as Demodex, stress, sun, extreme temperatures, spicy food, hot drinks, alcohol and tobacco.
