How to protect children from the sun?

Children's fragile skin is particularly vulnerable to the sun's harmful effects, and sunburns in childhood increase the risk of developing skin cancer in adulthood. When exposure to the sun cannot be avoided, appropriate sun protection is essential from an early age.

Simple everyday gestures

  • Choosing the right times to go out

    Why?

The intensity of the sun's rays reaching the skin depends mainly on the sun's position in the sky. When the sun is at its highest, its rays are more direct and more dangerous for the skin.

Tip: the shorter the shadows, the greater the risk of exposure.

    How?

    • Avoid exposure during the hottest hours (between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.).

    • Choose shady areas under trees, umbrellas or shelters for outdoor activities.

    • If exposure is unavoidable, protect skin as much as possible with clothing and apply sunscreen to uncovered parts of the body.

  • Use protective clothing

    Why?

There's more to sun protection than just applying sunscreen.

    How?

    • Choose light, long clothing, or even anti-UV clothing, and a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face, ears and neck.
    • Don't forget sunglasses with UV protection.
  • Apply a suitable sunscreen

    Why?

It's important to regularly and generously apply sunscreen with a high protection factor (SPF 50 or 50+).

It's essential to pass on the right photoprotection reflexes from an early age.

    How?

    • Apply sunscreen generously to face and body before exposure to the sun.

    • Remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours, or immediately after perspiring, swimming or toweling off, to maintain protection.

    • Don't forget often-neglected areas such as the ears, neck, tops of feet, hands and behind the knees.

  • Don't neglect moisturizing and after-sun care

    Why?

Children dehydrate more quickly and don't necessarily think about drinking when they're busy playing.

    How?

Make sure children drink plenty of water at regular intervals.

To moisturize and soothe skin overheated by sun exposure, apply a repairing lotion generously to clean, dry face and/or body after exposure.

How to choose the right sun cream?

  • Opt for a cream with a high protection factor (SPF), preferably 50+, offering broad-spectrum protection, i.e. against both UVA and UVB rays.

  • Choose a sun cream specially formulated for children's sensitive skin, highly water-resistant and preferably fragrance-free.

  • Choose textures that are easy to apply.

Beware of specific environments

Beach and mountains: sand, water and snow reflect UV rays, increasing exposure.

Under clouds: The sun's UV rays penetrate clouds, so it's important to protect children even on overcast days.

How much sunscreen should I use?

Doses should be generous and evenly distributed over all exposed areas.

For example, apply 2 fingers of cream on a child's arm (or about 8 sprays for a spray). Reducing this quantity would diminish the level of protection.

Reapply frequently.
