How to treat atopic eczema?

Atopic eczema has 3 main characteristics¹ :
Itching (or pruritus), accompanied by sleep disturbance in infants and a reflex to scratch. In older children and adults, this itching leads to scratching lesions and even abrasions.
Inflammatory skin lesions: redness and thickening of the skin in characteristic areas, giving the skin a rough, red appearance, accompanied by small vesicles. When these break, they produce oozing and give way to scabs.
Cutaneous dryness (or xerosis) outside the areas affected by eczema.
Adopt a specific routine to care for your skin on a daily basis.
Adapting your hygiene (1)
Why?
Daily moisturizing and hygiene will work in synergy.
How?
Avoid hot showers or baths (showers are preferable), as they aggravate skin dryness and intensify itching. It is advisable to continue showering during flare-ups, using suitable products.
Dry by dabbing, not rubbing, to avoid irritating the skin.
It's important to use specific toiletries adapted to atopic skin. These are formulated without fragrance, with gentle surfactants and a physiological pH to avoid skin irritation, provide long-lasting hydration and soothe itching.
Moisturize your skin daily (2)
Why?
People suffering from atopic eczema have permanently dry skin all over their bodies, which impairs the barrier function of the epidermis. The use of emollient (i.e. moisturizing) creams helps restore this function. Regular application of emollients helps to space out and minimize flare-ups, and reduce the need for dermocorticoids.
How?
Emollients should be applied all over the body, once or twice a day.
Simple everyday measures (3)
Why?
To improve treatment efficacy, space out flare ups and enhance patients' quality of life.
How?
Avoid irritating textiles (wool, synthetics, coarse fibres) in favour of fine-fibre fabrics such as cotton and linen.
Cut fingernails regularly, especially for children, to minimize scratching lesions.
Application of Dexeryl emollient cream
