Aluminium salts
Aluminum comes in many forms. In cosmetics and for skin applications, aluminum salts are most commonly used.
Here are some examples of names that you can find on the list of ingredients of antiperspirants: aluminum chlorohydrate, aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex gly, aluminum sesquichlorohydrate, etc.
Dangerous to health?
The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS), the committee that guarantees the safety of cosmetic products, ruled on their safety in 2019. The results of scientific studies show that the aluminum contained in antiperspirants is not absorbed by the skin, including freshly shaved skin. They are therefore not stored in the skin but rather eliminated on the clothes and by natural desquamation of the skin.
The BFR (German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment) conducted a new study and aligned with the CSSC opinion in August 2020.
Today, the entire scientific community is therefore aligned on the safety of aluminum salts and their use in cosmetics in antiperspirants.
