Atopic dermatitis is characterized by dry, itchy skin, an impaired skin barrier, and an imbalanced skin microbiome.
The enzymes on the surface of the skin differ depending on whether the subject is healthy or atopic.
20 subjects were included in the study, including 10 healthy subjects and 10 atopic subjects who benefited from a cure at the Avène spa. Samples of the upper layers of the skin were collected by removing strips in order to analyze the enzymatic activity by fluorescent spectrometry after reaction with chromophoric substrates.
The resumption of trypsin activity and the attenuation of phospholipase activity was parallel to the decrease in clinical parameters of atopic dermatitis.
The study therefore showed that the restoration of normal enzymatic activity is linked to a clear improvement in SCORAD.
