A high-emollient liquid cleanser for very dry and atopic-prone skin

Favrel S. et all.
Journal of Cosmetic Dermatoly 2020

Objective

The study aims to evaluate the tolerance and efficacy of a high-emollient liquid cleanser (HELC) designed for very dry and atopic-prone skin, without additional skincare. The tested product is a soap-free and fragrance-free liquid cleanser, containing mild surfactants and a blend of emollients (glycerin, vaseline, paraffin).

Study

This was a monocentric, open-label, intra-individual study conducted under dermatological, pediatric, and ophthalmological supervision. The study took place between winter 2015 and spring 2016 in Gdańsk, Poland.

Population

A total of 50 participants were included:

  • 12 adults (≥18 years old, mean age: 36 years)
  • 19 children (3-18 years old, mean age: 6 years)
  • 19 infants (3-36 months old, mean age: 17 months)

Inclusion criteria: Dry to very dry skin with an atopic tendency and a SCORAD (Scoring Atopic Dermatitis) between 10 and 25. The use of additional moisturizing or emollient products was prohibited during the study.

Dosage

The cleanser was applied at least once daily on the face and body for 21 days.

Duration

21 days, with evaluations on Day 1 (D1) and Day 22 (D22).

Primary Evaluation Criterion

Dermatological and ophthalmological tolerance of the product.

Secondary Evaluation Criteria

  • Improvement of skin condition through SCORAD (Scoring Atopic Dermatitis)
  • Short- and long-term hydration effect measured using Corneometer®
  • Cosmetic acceptability, assessed through a subjective evaluation questionnaire

Tolerance

  • Skin tolerance: Overall good tolerance. A few minor reactions (dryness, tightness) were observed, mostly due to the lack of additional skincare.
  • Eye tolerance: Excellent, with no adverse reactions attributed to the product.

Results

  • SCORAD: Significant improvement (-60% on average, p < 0.001).
  • Skin hydration: Increased by +11% after 1 hour and +19% after 21 days (p < 0.001).
  • Satisfaction:
    • 90% of participants appreciated the product.
    • 92% found it gentle and pleasant.
    • 88% felt their skin was more comfortable after use.

Conclusion

The high-emollient liquid cleanser demonstrated good skin and eye tolerance, significant improvement in dryness and pruritus, and a notable moisturizing effect after 21 days of use. Its use alone improved the condition of very dry and atopic-prone skin without the need for additional skincare.
