Current controversies in trichology: a European expert consensus statement
Journal of European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology
2021
Objective
Establish relevant recommendations concerning the latest advances in alopecia, trichoscopy and hair dermocosmetics
Methodology
- Delphi method: 45 European dermatologists with expertise in trichology give their views on a set of 20 recommendations (4-point Likert scale)
- Consensus is validated when more than 80% of participants have given a score of 1 (strongly agree) or 2 (agree) in relation to the proposed recommendation
Results
- 100% of proposed recommendations have been validated as a consensus by experts
- 3 recommendations in particular received the approval of 100% of the experts:
Alopecia
- "Mesotherapy combined with dutasteride is a useful treatment for patients with androgenetic alopecia. A protocol must be established."
Dermocosmetics
- "An innovative generation of in vitro models is needed to faithfully reproduce the native hair follicle using long-term organ culture and tissue engineering. These models will be useful for better understanding hair follicle biology and improving alopecia treatment prior to clinical trials in patients."
- "The identification of active ingredients specifically targeting intra- and extra-follicular signaling pathways (such as the Wnt/β catenin pathway, microcirculation, growth factors, cytokines, hormones, enzymes) could help improve the treatment of hair loss."
Conclusion
- The recommendations agreed upon in this study may be useful in the clinical practice of dermatologists
